Because my 2011 Escape Limited has no spare tire and I’m retiring to rural Alaska in a couple of months I needed to be able to carry at least one spare tire and I didn’t feel the roof was an option because of the increased drag. In this case the Reese Towpower was just the ticket and works fine mounted in my rear trailer hitch. Obviously, it does interfere with access to the rear cargo section of the vehicle via the back hatch but this is a small price to pay for having a spare tire readily available especially as I will be driving it on the Alaska Highway. I intend to continue to use the unit as is once I’m living in rural Alaska as the roads up there aren’t always the best!

Heavy duty, well made and designed, high quality product. I used this Tire carrier on my last trip to Alaska. The Alcan and Canadian roads had sections which were in very poor condition. Lots of frost heaves and pot holes. Beat the heck out of the truck. The conditions made it very rough for this Tire Carrier. I carried a dual wheel tire on the carrier which probably weighed near 100 pounds. This, Draw-Tite carrier performed outstanding. No bending, twisting or damage whatsoever. I am amazed at how this carrier performed. I used it on a front receiver so it would not be necessary for me to crawl under the truck (in the mud) in the event of a flat. I believe this carrier would perform equally well if used in a rear receiver to any vehicle.Highly, recommended, well priced. Note: Unlike other tire carriers, this carrier pitches the tire more close to 90 degrees and closer to the hood of my truck. Other brands project out more from the bumper. Lastly, use a anti-rattle clamp to keep the tire from going back and forth and up and down.

I put this on a 2010 Nissan Frontier. The drawbar was a couple of inches to short for my hitch so I used a 7” hitch extension. Some play/wobble is normal for anything that is hitch mounted so I used a couple of anti-rattle clamps and 5/8ths grade 8 bolts with locking nuts instead of hitch pins and it’s solid with zero play or wobble. I liked the Draw-Tite spare carrier over the Curt because on the Draw-Tite the upright portion has a slight forward bend vs the rearward bend on the Curt. The tire still leans back some but not as drastically. After going back and looking at the hitch options again I don’t think I would’ve needed the extension if I’d used the Draw-Tite hitch instead of the Curt brand.

Product was damaged in shipping the first order. I was refunded, and I had to reorder. I did still get it before our 2,000 mile trip, luckily.I upsized the tires on our 07 Pilot to 245/70/16 and the full size spare won’t fit in the temp spare location…thus this was my solution.The tire carrier fits out standard size hitch, and the 245/70/16 spare fits perfectly. Solid materials and will be used for my other vehicle as well. Note that it will prevent rear hatch access…This came with the hardware to mount the spare; however, I did have to get larger washers to prevent them from sinking into my spare wheel lug holes.

I am using this for a Class C RV. The tire is 30″ mounted on a 16″ rim and weighs approx. 65 lbs. The other spare tire hitch mounts tilted the tire so much that it would have hit the RV. It seems very sturdy, so I won’t be worrying about the spare. This is a good option, because I can move it to the front if I want to tow something. The packaging was poor and the “head” broke out of the box causing a chip in the paint.

If you lose one of the three 7/16 carriage bolts, bolt retainers, or the nuts, you’ll in trouble! Why? because you won’t be able to find a replacement in most hardware stores since most of them carry only 3/8” or 1/2”, but not 7/16” which is an odd size.If you look for them in Amazon, you’ll have to buy packages of 25 or 50 pieces for each (bolts, retainers, washers and nuts) and by the end you’ll need to pay almost as much as you paid for the spare tire mount.The weak point in that 3 bolts setup are the bolts retainers, which are flimsy and can be pushed through the slide cutouts that keep the bolts in place. When you lift a 65 pounds spare tire and try to mount it on the carrier, chances are that the rim will push the bolts out of place as if the retainers weren’t even there.To remedy that problem I used 3/8” thin (stainless) flat washers between the bolts and the retainers. The 3/8” washers were tight enough to ‘screw’ into the bolts, and then I added the retainers on top. That was an excellent solution to keep the bolts in place tightly, but still slidable enough.

I bought this spare tire carrier for the back of my Runaway Venturist camper. It fits the hitch great. I mounted a spare 285 70 R17 tire to the mount and it works just right with about 3/4″ gap away from the back of the trailor. The only thing I would recommend doing if you have a larger tire like mine is to purchase some longer carriage bolts so I could start the nut better. Your local hardware store probably isn’t going to have this bolt so I got them on Amazon. 014973453244 Carriage Bolt Grade 5, 7/16-14 x 2, Piece-6. After doing this I kind of wish I would have got the 21/2″ long bolts instead of the 2″, just to get the nuts started easier. It will help to have someone assist you while assembling this carrier.

Good build to it and seems like it’ll take abuse but definitely had to get an anti hitch rattler.
