Tips for replaycing a new power steering pump
- When replacing a power steering pump the entire hydraulic system needs to be flushed.
- The system filled with the manufacturer specified power steering fluid.
- Follow the manufacturer’s specified bleeding procedure to remove air and minimize noise.
Before replacing a power steering pump make sure you have diagnosed the problem properly. Always check the power steering fluid level with the engine off. Running a hydraulic pump without fluid can permanently damage the unit. Inspect the power steering fittings, hoses, reservoir, cooler and pump for leaks.
Function/Working of a Power Steering Pump
The power steering pump is driven by the engine’s crankshaft via a belt-pulley mechanism. The pump is usually located in the front of the engine, adjacent to the alternator or AC compressor. The steering pump compresses the hydraulic fluid at a rate directly proportional to the speed of the engine. The pump is built as such to provide the required pressure in different engine conditions such as idling or running at high speeds.
Symptoms of power steering pump failure
Difficulty in turing the wheel
The most common symptoms associated with power steering pump failure is you will feel difficulty in turning the steering wheel. The steering wheel of your vehicle will feel very stiff than usual and you will have to use a lot of strength & force just to make a basic turn.
Appearance of the power steering
When the power steering fluid which has turned to dark grey indicates oxidationd, it can cause the tubes that move the fluid to gum up, which leads to power steering failure. If you notice foams or bubbles present in the fluid, then it indicates water or air in the power steering line.
Fluid levers
If the level of your power steering fluid is low, then it is a sign of a leak, which might be caused due to a failing power steering pump. A low power steering fluid level can also cause the pump to produce abnormal sounds.
Squealing sound
If you hear a squealing noise when you turn the steering wheel, or when driving slowly, it means the power steering pump is failing. and when you start the car & hear a clunking or chattering noise under the hood, it is related to the power steering pump failure.

Power steering pump for ’08 Honda Accord was purchased November 2022. By the end of June 2023 it started making a loud noise that gets worse as the engine accelerates and quieter as engine slows down. Also, the pully has started to wobble. Power steer fluid level is fine. The part is junk! Return window has closed. Trying to get in touch with seller to see if he will help out, like a local parts store would. If not, I have learned my lesson and will not buy any more parts through Amazon!

For 2009 Honda Accord 2.5L. My mechanic said it was a high quality part, especially after I told him the price.

Other than getting later on the day I expected it the pump works just fine. Whether it lasts a while only time will tell.

I didn’t replace myself, but the mechanic had the part replaced in 10 minutes and the squeeling stopped. Car is quiet once again.
