Awesome and simple tool. I own a fairly new Mercedes diesel, and for some reason the check engine light goes on a little too frequently (well I do supply it with a fairly healthy percentage of “home brew” biodiesel). Since I’m now out of (factory) warranty, I can’t seem to part with the $100/hr to have the dealer tell me if it’s a simple or difficult repair. Well, I came home from a business trip to find the check engine light (CEL) on and (this is the best part), asked my wife, when and under what condition did the light go on, and her reply (really) was, “oh, I don’t look at that part if the display, well that’s interesting…ok, back to this tool. It shows up, I notice, hmmmm no battery cover….instructions don’t even talk about a battery….odd. Note to the manufacturer: Please state the the device is powered via the vehicle’s power….so after putting the reader BACK together, I plug it into the ODB plug, and does a little boot up thingy (technical word), and states, one code, P0XXX. I look it up in their little book, and it says glow plug, cylinder #6. Cool, I can do that! So I order a replacement Bosch glow plug ($17), it’s as easy as changing a spark plug….no it’s even easier, because it’s sitting right on the top of the engine…20 minutes later, I replug the scanner into the car, erase the code (takes all of 6 seconds), and I’m done. Considering the dealer’s charge ($100 to read, and another $100 to erase it, no really that is what Mercedes charges, and don’t forget the snotty attitude, that a Mercedes owner is working on their car…we KNOW what you paid for it, so we know you can afford to fix it), yes well, I happen to enjoy working on my car, it a fun and satisfying….so GREAT tool, easy to use, doesn’t need a battery (NOW I know), and I made $120 on the first repair, and it only gets better from here….

I have an issue paying someone $100 for them to plug in a gadget like this to read a code that tells me what could be wrong with my car. At the same time, I hate the concept that I have to buy something like this to tell me what could possibly be wrong with my car. That said, I’m glad that they sell this product. Its great. It works on literally all 1996 and newer vehicles. When your check engine light comes on, follow the instructions and plug this in. It will read the code on the computer on your car that you can use to tell what could be wrong with your car.A few things:A) this is the base model of these types of products so you won’t get some of the super advanced features of ODBII but it will give you the codeB) You can erase the code with this once you fix your car problemC) It doesn’t require batteriesOf note, the codes are not perfect. They’re only designed to help you troubleshoot and usually a code can have several root cause problems. That said, its nice being able to plug this in and know if you have a problem that requires the car to be taken in or if its a $1.99 part that I can replace myself.I bought it because my check engine light came on. Literally, the source of the problem was an unusual condition that sometimes occurs in cold weather — no repairs were necessary to my Car…cost to diagnose: the cost of this scanner (which I get to keep for future use).Cost if I had taken it in….likely $100 for pluggin in the machine…AND an unscrupulous mechanic could have chosen from 4 parts to replace (the least expensive $1.99 and the most expensive about $200 + $200 in labor)….hmmm…This is a nice product. Get it. Save money.

I bought the Actron CP9125 OBD scanner back in Dec 2006 to keep in my older 1999 car because I want to be able to diagnose an Engine Check light ASAP myself. Many auto repairs places will charge outrageous prices just to tell you what your Engine Check light is all about. Although others (like some auto parts stores) will do a free readout diagnostic, one can’t always depend on being near one conveniently available to determine whether if something needs immediate attention (e.g while on a trip out of the home area). Also, it can be useful to have the ability to turn off the code(s) that are non-critical/possibly spurious so one doesn’t drive around with the light on and some new (serious) code(s) shows up at the same time unknownly. For the cost of what some places charge, and having the instant knowledge to help make decisions, it’s worth considering having one in car “just in case” as one use will pay for most of the cost of a low cost scannerFor me so far, it’s come in handy twice since purchase, once for diagnosing an EGR problem (had to use repair shop with lift to access the EGR valve replacement), and a spark plug problem (had to replace wires). Great to have the knowledge of the Engine Check light code(s) involved when talking with the repair shop. One thing I don’t like about this unit is the very short cable, and the difficulty I have plugging in and detaching the scanner connector with my car’s OBD output plug, I have to lie almost upside down to connect because of the output plug location/mounting orientation, and the output plug tab locks that snap-in to prevent inadvertent disconnects. I then have to use a small screw-driver or knife to spread the plug lip a bit to disconnect, still difficult to do. I finally bought a cheap 4″ extension (longer available) off eBay for ca. $6, taped the car output plug lock tabs so they wouldn’t catch, and left the extension connected permanently so I can more easily connect/disconnect the scanner. The other thing is that the software CD that comes with the scanner is basically useless, all it does is look up what the few words associated with a trouble code, but the associated code explanation is less than what’s in the PDF manual on the CD and what you can get off the Internet. I just printed the relevant codes for my car model and keep the set with the scanner in the car.

Oh, those pesky dash lights. Turns off but same 2 errors pop up on occasion. Insignificant errors per my mechanic. I use this too turn off. I’ve heard a black piece of electrical tape over the particular error light works like a charm also. 😂🤣😂☘️🇮🇪🇨🇦
